<h1>Benin Project </h1>Since 2003, French-speaking medical students and residents from the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine have travelled to Benin for a four-week elective. They and their clinical supervisors spend three weeks in various clinical settings around Cotonou and Porto-Novo, the capital. The remaining week is spent in Kolli, a rural village northwest of the capital, where they are immersed in the local culture and deliver basic medical care. A 2019 participant recalls waking up one morning to hundreds of people waiting outside the clinic. It was then that he realized the major health needs of the local population. Over the next week, the fourteen-strong group of Canadians, supported by a local team, provided care to more than 1,100 people. This rotation, organized by <a href="https://www.uottawa.ca/faculty-medicine/francophone-affairs" target="_blank">Francophone Affairs at the Faculty of Medicine</a>, provides Canadian medical trainees with an unparalleled experience that enriches them on a personal level. By their own admission, this unique experience also shapes their professional identity and their future medical careers. “The internship gave me a rich and unforgettable human, cultural and medical experience that has shaped the doctor I am becoming,” said one 2019 participant. Thanks to these transformative experiences, these students will be able to adapt their practices to serve the very diverse population here in Canada, and more specifically, to better serve Black patients originally from French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa. Exposure to a completely different culture and to the specific health challenges of West Africa helps learners understand that health care must be provided in a culturally safe context that considers the specific needs of the population. They develop the sensitivity and openness that pave the way for greater empathy, while improving their listening and communication skills, which are so important for patient-centered care. Ultimately, this experience makes them better doctors. Your donations to this campaign will directly support the trainees by helping to offset the expenses associated with the rotation. Your donations will also be used to purchase supplies to help consultations in Kolli run safely and smoothly, such as basic medicines, mosquito nets and medical equipment. Un participant de 2019 se rappelle avoir vu, tôt le matin, des centaines de personnes faire la file à l’extérieur de la clinique. C’est à ce moment-là qu’il s’est rendu compte de l’ampleur des besoins de la population locale en matière de soins de santé. Dans la semaine qui a suivi le groupe de 14 personnes venant du Canada, appuyé par une équipe de la région, a donné des soins à plus de 1 100 personnes. Ce programme mené par les <a href="https://www.uottawa.ca/faculte-medecine/affaires-francophones" target="_blank">Affaires francophones de la Faculté de médecine</a> offre aux stagiaires d’ici une expérience incomparable, unique et fort enrichissante sur le plan personnel. De leur propre aveu, elle façonne aussi leur identité professionnelle et oriente leur future carrière dans le domaine médical. « Riche et inoubliable sur les plans humain, culturel et médical, ce stage a une influence sur la personne que je deviens sur le plan professionnel », raconte une personne qui a vécu l’expérience en 2019. C’est grâce à ces expériences transformatrices que les étudiantes et étudiants seront en mesure d’adapter leur pratique en fonction de la population très diversifiée que nous avons au Canada, et plus particulièrement de mieux servir la patientèle noire provenant de l’Afrique subsaharienne francophone. L’exposition à une culture complètement différente et aux problèmes de santé propres aux populations de l’Afrique occidentale les aide à comprendre qu’il faut prodiguer des soins dans un contexte culturellement respectueux et dans une perspective qui tient compte des besoins uniques de cette population. Ce stage leur permet de développer la sensibilité et l’ouverture qui mènent à une plus grande empathie et d’améliorer leur capacité à écouter et à communiquer, compétences essentielles dans toute pratique axée sur la patientèle. Enfin, cette expérience en fait de meilleurs médecins. Les dons que vous verserez dans le cadre de cette campagne aideront directement les stagiaires, qui pourront les utiliser pour payer une partie des coûts associés au stage. Il servira également à acheter les fournitures nécessaires pour assurer la sécurité et le bon déroulement des consultations, comme des médicaments de base, des moustiquaires et de l’équipement médical.
