The Moonlit Memory Walk is Home Hospice Association's annual fundraiser that brings people and communities together to commemorate their loved ones who have died. Join us in various locations on October 17, 2024, to remember your loved ones, to share how they lived, to say their name, and to grow their legacy. We recognize that grief and commemoration look different for everyone, and we look forward to walking alongside side you through your individual journey.
Stormin' Norman's Crew: Walking for Compassion and Change
Norm’s story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and the urgent need for compassionate, trauma-informed care at the end of life.
Throughout his life, Norm endured layers of trauma that eventually led to struggles with addiction. When he sought help, he was met with judgment and stigma. Four years ago, Norm went to the hospital with severe stomach pain. Instead of receiving compassionate and competent care, he was dismissed by healthcare staff, who told him to stop using drugs. The shame reinforced by this interaction drove him away without treatment, even as his pain worsened.
Three months later, Norm returned to the hospital in unbearable pain and was diagnosed with end-stage colon cancer. He died just three weeks later, with no time to reconnect with his daughter, Savannah. His final days were marked by neglect and a lack of empathy from hospital staff. After his death, the hospital offered to investigate, but his sister Connie, overwhelmed with grief and anger, declined, knowing it would not change what had happened.
This year, Savannah and Connie are walking with 'Stormin' Norman's Crew' to honour their father/brother’s memory and raise awareness about the critical importance of trauma-informed care. Savannah and Connie, who is also a panelist for the upcoming
'When There Are No Words' event, join others deeply connected to the 'Pathways to Peace' program in raising funds to ensure that no one else suffers from the silencing effects of stigma and judgment.
The
'Pathways to Peace' program offers compassionate, trauma-informed end-of-life care, helping people like Norm and their families find peace and comfort. Please support 'Stormin' Norman's Crew' and help ensure the future sustainability of this important work.
