Every year, Equitas hosts the #EquiTalks, an exciting series of events that brings together thought leaders from the community, academic, philanthropic, and corporate sectors to share experiences and good practices that contribute to building more inclusive and rights-respecting communities.
December 10, 2023, marked the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Equitas is taking this opportunity to reflect on the past 75 years of human rights successes and challenges and to reflect on what lies ahead of us in terms of advancing equality, social justice, and respect for human dignity in Canada and around the world. In an era where polarization on human rights issues is widespread, human rights education is a powerful tool to transform division into dialogue.
This #EquiTalks on February 15, 2024, we are thrilled to be joined by:
- Myrlande Pierre - Vice-President of Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse du Québec, responsible for the Commission's mandate under the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. Expert on systemic racism and discrimination and issues affecting women from racialized and minority communities.
- Elysia Bryan-Barnes - Director of the Bishop's University Forum, a civic youth leadership institute. The first black woman to hold a permanent television news anchor position in Quebec. Mentor for young black journalists, 2022 CBC Quebec Black Changemaker.
- Hétéra Estimphil - President of Equitas partner organization, Kouraj, and LGBTQI+ activist in Haiti. Human rights educator, gender specialist, and intersectional feminist.
- Alejandro Mayoral Baños - Executive Director of Indigenous Friends Association (IFA). Advocate for technology equity, digital sovereignty, and sustainable career pathways for Indigenous communities.
- Maiwand Rahyab - Founder and CEO of Resilient Societies, an activist-led platform for empowering at-risk democracy and civil society activists.
- Pearl Eliadis - Human rights lawyer, community activist, and Associate Professor at the Max Bell School of Public Policy in Montreal.
The event will take place in Salle Polyvalente, on the first floor of the picturesque Bell Telephone Building at 1050 Beaver Hall Hill in downtown Montreal. There will be a cocktail event at 5:30 – 6:30 pm EST followed by the panel discussion from 6:30 – 8 pm. There will be appetizers and drinks available at the cocktail event, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. The panel discussion will be bilingual, with live translation available.
This will be a hybrid event – if you're not able to participate in person, tune in via Zoom at 6:30 pm EST to our live stream from anywhere in the world.
As a public engagement initiative, the event is accessible to all for free but we would greatly appreciate donations through the donation ticket option. All donations go towards supporting our work advancing equality, social justice, and respect for human dignity in Canada and around the world through human rights education.
We can't wait to see you there!
A special thank you to the TD Bank Group for their generous support of this event.
