A Journey Through Time and Water: Underwater Archaeology

Event closed

People have always lived beside the sea. Marine archaeology continues from the shoreline, exploring the depths beyond – studying the material culture left behind as people ventured into the oceans. Though its archaeological challenges may differ from those of terrestrial archaeology, marine archaeology shares many practices and concerns in common: excavation, preservation, and dealing responsibly with cultural claims. In this presentation marine archaeologist, Rob Rondeau will discuss how marine and terrestrial archaeology work together to give a more complete picture of the past. He’ll also talk about how his career has progressed and share some anecdotes about what it’s been like along the way, both above and below the water.

Rob Rondeau is a Ph.D. Candidate at Simon Fraser University. He is the recipient of the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Ph.D.) and was named a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society in 2012.
