Caribbean Kensington Walking Tour

24 Cecil St, Toronto, ON M5T 1N2, Canada

Join us to learn about Black history and presence in Kensington Market: such as how entrepreneurs like Yvonne Grant, who opened Caribbean Corner in 1977, fomented a Caribbean community that continues to this day with Black-owned businesses of all kinds, including a barbershop, hat store, vintage stores and restaurants like Rasta Pasta. This walk will also cover earlier 20th century history, such as how between 1925 to 1982, Kensington Market was also home to the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) Hall, an organization based on the principles of Jamaican political activist Marcus Garvey, and was an important hub for Toronto's Black community. This walk promises to deliver surprises even for those who know Kensington Market well.

This walk is a fundraiser for the KMCLT and is presented in partnership with Wildseed Centre for Art & Activism.
