Call for Donations to Endow a Research Award in Honor of Marie Kelleher (1970-2024) **Click on "What impact will this donation have?" button below for information**

Marie Kelleher passed away, tragically, on Monday, May 6th.
Marie's indefatigable spirit, boundless energy, and willingness to give and collaborate were legendary among friends and colleagues throughout the Anglo-American world as well as within her adoptive home of Barcelona and Catalonia where she spent most every summer exploring archives, taking pictures, savoring good coffee and vegetarian eateries, practicing Catalan, relaxing in the company of friends, and loving life in general.
After receiving her PhD from Kansas under the tutelage of her beloved advisor, Jim Brundage, Marie developed an internationally recognized expertise in a wide assortment of subfields, with major award-winning publications on the history of women and gender, legal history, the study of food crises, and urban history, just to mention a few. Her much awaited monograph on fourteenth-century Barcelona, the product of over a decade of tireless work, is forthcoming from Cornell University Press. Even as she confronted what appeared to be a long battle ahead with cancer, Marie never lost her optimism and zest for scholarship. She couldn't wait to see this second book come out or to start work on a new micro-historical trade book project she had been envisioning for years.
As a wildly popular and endlessly giving teacher and mentor of undergraduates and MA students at Cal-State Long Beach for over twenty years, Marie was constantly scheming about how to craft new, ever more engaging learning experiences that would inspire the young people in her classrooms. As a board member of the American Academy of Research Historians of Medieval Spain (AARHMS), she has been a powerful creative force, with endless ideas about how to improve the organization's ability to serve its members and enrich scholarship and teaching in the field.
Her death leaves a huge void in the field and a tremendous sense of emptiness and sadness among those who knew her, admired her, and were inspired by her pathbreaking research and teaching. We will deeply miss her laughs, quirkiness, unstoppable curiosity, and compassion.

AARHMS is coordinating an effort to memorialize Marie's incalculable contributions as a teacher and researcher by raising an endowment for an annual scholarly award in her name to support excellence research and writing in her favorite subfields. Thanks to the tremendous generosity of a growing group of colleagues and friends throughout the world, we have already received commitments of over $12,000 to endow this award. Please help us increase the size of this endowment by participating in this campaign. Since AARHMS is a non-profit organization, your gift is 100% tax-deductible (for US-based donors).
