Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition (MPAC) aims to establish a justice system grounded in restorative values, focusing on human dignity, accountability, and transformation over punishment. We work to address systemic deficiencies in the criminal legal system that perpetuate cycles of harm and marginalization for individuals, families, and communities. In Maine, with its aging population and rural landscape, reentry challenges are significant, making MPAC's mission even more crucial as we look toward 2025.
It's our goal to provide solutions to Maine's ongoing issues of recidivism, mental health, and substance use, which disproportionately impact BIPOC and marginalized communities, with lasting effects on families, neighborhoods, and society. MPAC’s restorative justice focus offers an alternative path that fosters resilience in individuals and communities.
Our initiatives include direct advocacy, reentry support programs, and community organizing. Through the Peer Health Navigator Program, formerly incarcerated individuals offer returning residents weekly support groups, personalized assistance, and community activities to help reestablish connections to Maine’s social and natural environments. This approach supports successful reintegration and empowers individuals to become community leaders.
MPAC believes in beginning a restorative approach with youth, which is why our Youth Engagement Coordinator mentors youth at Long Creek Youth Development Center, Maine’s juvenile detention facility. This program connects young people with positive influences, focusing on personal development and skill-building to support successful community reentry.
A dedicated Strategic Partnerships Coordinator extends MPAC’s impact by building connections with local organizations, amplifying support for system-impacted individuals. Monthly Strategy and Community Meetings provide an inclusive platform where community members, advocates, and system-impacted individuals shape MPAC’s programming, aligning our strategies with community needs.
With your support, we can create a more equitable future.
Thank you.
