Your generous donation can put us within reach of a successful auction bid to acquire this historic document for Clan Oliphant. But we have less than two weeks to pull this off. The auction is on April 5th! You can view its current status here.
In 1787, George Washington signed the certificate for Dr. David Olyphant of Newport, Rhode Island for his membership in the Society of Cincinnati. The Society of the Cincinnati is the USA's oldest patriotic organization, founded in 1783 by officers of the Continental Army who served together in the American Revolution. Its mission is to promote knowledge and appreciation of the achievement of American independence and to foster fellowship among its members. It is also signed by Washington's Secretary of War, Henry Knox, senior General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
Dr. David Olyphant himself was a prominent figure in American colonial history as "Director of the Southern Hospitals of the United American States" during the Revolutionary War.
Your generous donation will help Clan Oliphant to bid successfully for this historic document to add to the commission signed by President Abraham Lincoln naming Joseph B. Oliphant as Paymaster of the Navy that was acquired in 2020. The Lincoln document is on display to the public at the Burlington County Lyceum of History & Natural Sciences in Mount Holly, NJ.
We hope that a bid in the neighborhood of $15,000 (or around $20,000 with buyer's premium and taxes) will be enough to win the auction. As with the Lincoln historic document, if we are successful, the Washington document will be displayed at a museum for public viewing.
Every donation is critical. Your donation of any amount is appreciated. You can donate anonymously if you prefer. Just indicate your choice in the little box on the donation page. As the Oliphant Clan & Family Association of North America is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, your donation may be tax-deductible depending on where you live and how you file. Check your local regulations.
Thank you!
All funds obtained through this fundraiser will be directed to obtaining the Olyphant/George Washington document. The goal is to raise $20,000 to cover the document, the buyer’s premium, shipping, banking fees, matting and framing, and any repairs needed. If the auctioned document is not procured, donors will be given written notice to select whether to be fully refunded, or whether to redirect all or part of their donation to the general fund of the Oliphant Clan & Family Association of North America. If no response is received within 14 days, then funds will be automatically refunded.
