David Hendon and Marc Gervais are both respected members of the Ocean Beach community. They are best known for how they used to get up each day at 4am to clean up the mess at the wall along the beachfront and the pier parking lot. Their commitment to the community went beyond cleaning the beach area as they were always keeping a look out for bad actors and other ways they could give back, and they did all these things, for many years, while homeless and living in a van.

On Memorial Day (in the morning) Marc, Dave and Pico (their doggo) were in a terrible accident that totaled their vehicle, put Marc in the hospital, and at a great loss, Dave died the following day in surgery.  Marc has several months of rehab, from his injuries, and is scheduled for a couple surgeries including heart surgery.

We are asking the community to help support Marc and Pico as they recover from the tragic situation and to help put Dave to rest.

In 2020 CBS8 ran a story on Marc and Dave. It was about a Mr. Pacana who lives in New Jersey and who watches one of the local surf cams every morning. Mr. Pacana watched Marc and Dave roll up to clean every morning and wanted to learn more about Marc and Dave and through the reporter Jeff Zevely he was able to get more details and start a gofundme to help Marc and Dave. And based on that initial CBS8 story and the love and respect they have from the community that initial gofundme raised more than $28,000 which helped them get into an apartment and repair their vehicle. Read a lot more details about Marc and Dave here.

Marc and Dave have never stopped caring for our community no matter what their circumstances were and oftentimes you could find Dave sweeping up at a local business and offering tasty treats to resident doggos. Dave will be missed by everyone and every dog who knew him.
