Good Dirt: BIPOC Farmer Oral History Project

The Good Dirt Oral History project aims to give voice to the rich stories and traditions of growing food of Black, Brown and indigenous farmers of Texas.

Our aim is to capture these stories, traditions, history of farming and farming experience and the cultural stories of farming by interviewing and filming farmers in 2024.

Through our research we have learned of Black Farmers as well as LatinX farmers who have protected and worked their lands for over 100 years to new farmers who use technology to explore new ways to grow food. We want to share and inspire and well as empower communities to revisit their traditions the culture and share their food stories and legacies.

We are also farmers and researches who have been active members of the farm and food community supporting land stewardship projects with a focus on sustainability and an advocate for Farm Bill traveling to D.C. to support land access for BIPOC Farmers as well as local food policy in the city of San Antonio.

Phase 1: With Texas being the state with the largest number of black farmers we will first begin with Central and South Texas and then move to all areas of Texas in later phases.

The funds raised from this initiative will help support:

-Travel assistance to visit Farmers sites for interviews and recording

-Upgrading film equipment and field recorders

-Securing event space for interviews and exhibit

-Honorarium to all participants for their time and support to the project

-Transcribing recordings

-Film editing

-Promotion and Marketing
