In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which devastated Western North Carolina (WNC) by uprooting tens of thousands of trees and damaging public lands, the Echoes of the Forest project seeks to transform tragedy into a lasting tribute. Our mission is to honor the lost trees by converting their remnants into artistic masterpieces, known as “Echoes,” that will serve as reflective spaces throughout the region. Each piece, whether a bench, arch, or sculpture, will not only commemorate the loss, but also celebrate the community's resilience and engagement.
Echoes of the Forest is committed to creating a comprehensive tree trail (or series of trails) that highlights these installations across WNC, providing a platform for local artisans to showcase their talent while promoting environmental stewardship and education. The project aims to raise awareness about conservation, the impact of natural disasters on the environment, and the stories behind each Echo and artist.
Our vision revolves around four core values: Resilience & Renewal, Creativity & Artistic Expression, Community Engagement & Healing, and Environmental Stewardship. We aim to foster a sense of collective healing and remembrance while also boosting regional tourism and economic activity.
The initial funding goal is $50,000 to support initial artist payments, marketing efforts, and project organization. Future funding opportunities will be explored through partnerships with private funders, a second crowdfunding campaign, grants, individual donations and like-kind donations once the project is fully established.
Echoes of the Forest presents a unique opportunity to transform loss into beauty while fostering community spirit and environmental awareness. We invite individuals and businesses to participate in this ambitious initiative, helping us honor the fallen trees of WNC and create a legacy of hope and healing. By coming together, we can create extraordinary spaces that resonate with meaning, art, and conservation.
