UPDATE: Andrew and Elizabeth really need your help! As of 2/28/25, FEMA has stopped paying for the Roberts’ hotel room. Their property is not yet ready for a trailer and we urgently need your support to get them into their new home!
Andrew and Elizabeth Roberts lost everything when Hurricane Helene tore through Madison, Florida, in September 2024. Trees were upturned, homes were crushed, and debris was scattered everywhere. The Roberts' home and car were among the devastation. A massive tree collapsed onto their house and car, destroying both and cutting off all power and water.
Starfish Disaster Recovery, a local nonprofit that aids disaster survivors, sprang into action. Volunteers rushed to find a solution, ensuring the couple had shelter and support
Starfish caseworkers immediately evacuated Andrew and Elizabeth, bringing them to a local Red Cross shelter. When the shelter closed, they were moved from one temporary location to another—first another shelter, then an Airbnb, and then to a hotel in a neighboring city.
Nearly four months later, the couple is still facing significant challenges. Today, the ruins of their home stand as a heartbreaking reminder of the storm's destruction.
FEMA provided the couple with a grant, but those funds were quickly spent on replacing essential belongings and trying to secure their now unstable life. Fortunately, Starfish was able to supply the Roberts with a donated trailer, and the couple also received a vehicle to help them get to medical appointments. But with nowhere to put the trailer, the couple is unable to live in their new home.
Now, we’re at the final step in getting Andrew and Elizabeth home. Starfish has secured permits to remove the remains of their destroyed house, allowing them to return to their property. However, the cost to demolish the home and clear the land is $16,000.
Our volunteers and crews are ready to take on this challenge—we just need your help to make it happen.
Every donation, big or small, brings Andrew and Elizabeth one step closer to rebuilding their lives. Please consider contributing and sharing their story. Together, we can help them find stability again.
