by Sona Tatoyan in collaboration with Jared Mezzocchi
directed by Jared Mezzocchi
featuring Sona Tatoyan, a tribe of 120 year old Karagöz Puppets, and oud player Ara Dinkjian

Syrian-Armenian-American theatre and film artist Sona Tatoyan, stranded in her family’s abandoned Aleppo home during the Syrian war, discovers her great-great-grandfather’s handmade Karagöz shadow puppets, salvaged from the Armenian Genocide. Guided by the storyteller Scherazad, the puppets unveil bawdy, hilarious, and haunting tales that transport Sona through an intergenerational, psychedelic journey, alchemizing a radiant truth: stories, when reimagined, possess the power to transmute trauma to healing.

Be Part of the Story: Support the world premiere of AZAD (the rabbit and the wolf) multimedia play

After a year of intense development residencies at The Vineyard Theater in NYC, UConn Global Affairs Digital Media Lab, Harvard artlab, and Wake Forest University, our multimedia play, AZAD (the rabbit and the wolf), is set to world premiere April 2025 in San Francisco! https://goldenthread.org/productions/azad/

December 2024, we started the vital work of developing various design elements in preparation for rehearsals in San Francisco in March, a process that involved countless moving parts and incredible talent - including world renowned oud player Ara Dinkjian, a core member of our creative team.

AZAD tells the story of rediscovered heritage, the healing of a woman’s trauma—a legacy shared by an entire people—and the search for and telling of truth in an age clouded by misinformation.

Our mission is to share this deeply Armenian tale with the world, translating our experiences into a universal language and bringing it to life on an international stage.

Thanks to incredible support, we’ve already secured a majority of our budget. But we still need your help to close a $173,599 funding gap.

By supporting these world class artists, you’ll be ensuring Azad is crafted with the highest quality and care.

Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to bringing AZAD to life. Your tax-deductible donation will make you a hakawati—a storyteller who helps preserve and share this vital narrative.

Join us in this mission. Make your donation today and become part of a story that needs to be told.

Thank you for your generosity and belief in the power of art. Together, we’ll bring AZAD to the world.

A bit about our work at Hakawati

In Middle Eastern cultures, the Hakawati–or storyteller in Arabic– has long been a cornerstone of society. They understood that storytelling was, and continues to be, a vital force for survival. Their tales weave together the threads of our shared humanity: educating, healing, uniting, and connecting us across every fracture.

Karagöz shadow puppetry, an ancient shamanistic art form designated by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage and emblematic of multicultural co-existence, sits at the heart of several of our projects at Hakawati. Inspired by the over century old collection of Abkar Knadjian, an Armenian Genocide survivor and puppeteer, his great-great granddaughter Sona Tatoyan, storyteller and founder of Hakawati, now shares his work of illumination and the spirit of his resilience with the world.
