In Mongolia, access to clean drinking water and proper sanitation remains a challenge, with only 30% of households having safe drinking water and just 56% having adequate sanitation facilities. In particular, Mongolia’s nomadic communities rely on natural water sources for their survival, but 76.8% of the country is now affected by desertification, leaving many herders without access to clean water. Wells are drying up or falling into disrepair, putting both families and livestock at risk.
The primary barriers to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene stem from inadequate infrastructure, further exacerbated by climate change, shrinking freshwater sources, expanding desertification, pollution, and limited prioritization in policies and budgets.
To address these challenges, it is essential to strengthen water systems and enhance community resilience. This means equipping local communities with the resources and support needed to adapt to and recover from environmental and infrastructure challenges.
This year, Trek Relief is supporting a new initiative to restore wells in rural Mongolia. By reviving these water sources, we ensure sustainable access to clean water, protect fragile ecosystems, and preserve Mongolia’s nomadic way of life.
The FARM team tests a newly restored well in Ulziit soum in Bayankhongor Province.
