The Art of Nature with Peaches Lukens

Event closed

These gatherings are designed to get you into Nature and bring out that artsy side of you that loves to create. The Science Center offers a wonderful serene space to take a break and get together with others while making some beautiful art.

We will gather inside and out but no need to bring a beach chair. A hat, sunscreen, and bug repellant might be useful!

Sign up for individual classes or take 4 for a reduced price.

Individual class $25.

4 class package $80. Each class is a different project so you can take all 8!

CARD ART

Let’s make some beautiful Nature cards together. We’ll design and create some handmade cards suitable for birthdays, holidays, get well or personal Blank notes for you to use or give as a gift to someone with ribbon tied round. Artists will have a variety of mediums to use: colored pencils, watercolors, brush pens, pen & ink and acrylics. If you have favorite quotes, poems or scripture you’d like to weave in, bring them with you. Each artist will have 4/4x5.5” blank cards and 2/3x3” complete with interesting vellum, or brown card stock envelopes included. If you have time to swing by the local post office, bring a few arty postage stamps with you. Stamp art is the best!

WILD ABOUT WOOD

Bring some local Nature to your wall, mantle, front door or wherever with these hand painted 5.5” square pieces of chunky wood. You can paint these 3 designs or whatever you choose. Three flowers from the garden. Three birds. Or mix it up with what you love most in Cape May. Before you paint, you’ll map out your designs on paper and then paint with acrylics on wood. Keep your designs simple and a bit abstract. A hanging bracket will be applied to the back and some clear all-weather varnish if you plan to put your pieces outside. Fond and pretty memories.

Thursday August 22

MINIATURE GARDEN

Let’s sit by the pond and ponder. We’ll create a tiny whimsical garden in a table-top container complete with living plant, moss, 2 wooden Adirondack chairs (that you can leave white or hand paint with your own design) that will sit alongside a small pond fashioned with a variety of stones, shells, sticks, miniature turtles or birds and little picket fence. Fairy and Miniature gardens are so fun to create. Warning: they can be addicting! If you’ve never made one, give it a go.

STORY TIME

There’s so much to love in Nature. And memories  associated  with what you love. Maybe it’s birds. Or a lake. Or a trail you walk. How about your backyard? Record what you love through illustration and written fonts and script. You have a 5x5” hardback book with 44 blank pages to begin your oneofakind record. You will design each page and mock up the pages before you begin on Page 1 so think about what you want this book to be before you come. Bring photos with you. If you want to mock it up before you come or simply begin its tale when you sit down in class, this will be a keepsake. I will help you with all parts of it and share such books I’ve made with you. And for whoever wants to, we can pass around our books to each other at the end of our session. Come ready to write and illustrate your story!

FOLK ART BIRDS
Local common birds look a bit different when decorated in Folk Art. This long piece of wood will stack 3-5 wild birds on top of one another and painted in folk art design for a beautiful piece for front porch, backyard, or in your home. Maybe give as a gift! Measuring 3’ long x 1.5’ wide it will be fun to paint and a wonderful addition wherever it goes.

Thursday September 12
THE MAGIC OF TERRARIUMS
Create a small little interior world of succulents, moss, stones and ceramic creatures that thrive within this glass environment indefinitely. Once topped off with the lid, the container becomes its own ecosystem and can thrive for months until watered a bit. Creating terrariums are now offered in rehabilitation centers and nursing homes because they calm the nervous system both in creating them and having one in your home or office. Take what you learn and make more for gifts or go bigger with a more extensive interior landscape.

Thursday September 19
WILD ORNAMENTS
You will have 3 non-breakable ornament or decorative balls to cover with the beauty of Nature. Hang them from the ceiling over your sink. Or on your porch. We will paint the first ball together step by step from the design given and the other two will be whatever you want to capture in miniature. Paint a favorite spot in Cape May that you love. A beloved bird or the infamous Monarch Butterfly. 3 different flowers. Your home or beach house. A pet! A special keepsake for someone. Think about what you might want to paint BEFORE you come and bring a few photos on your phone or from a book or magazine. Hook included.

Thursday September 26
EAR ART
Paint your own earrings! You’ll get 3 different wooden shapes and sizes complete with wire loop to paint with acrylics. You could walk out of class wearing a pair! Fill these tiny canvases with flowers, birds, leaves, vines, shells, a beach scene or to match a pattern in a favorite outfit. Give as a gift! Start your own biz! Jump in and have fun. And definitely look cool wearing your own art.
All supplies will be provided.

This is an adult class for participants 18 and over

Peaches Lukens has been drawing and exploring the natural world since she could crawl or hold a crayon. She has been passionately journaling since her first Dear Diary at the age of 5. An avid Doodler, she just follows a creative flow that is fun and calming. Her children and grandchildren love looking through her particular art journals, some serious, some silly. Peaches lives on Cape Island with her husband Mike. They are knee-deep in rehabbing an old homestead, where she finds lots of wonderful stuff to draw and remember.
