Tattoo Information

Dancers will be participating in a "Mass Fling" act as cast members in The Washington Tattoo A Tartan Day Celebration under the direction of the Alexandria School of Highland Dance, with a minimum of two shows on Saturday, March 29, 2025. This act consists of

Part A) a brief choreographed section, followed by

Part B) a traditional 4-step Highland Fling.

All dancers will participate in the Fling (Part B) and must submit video #1. Premier dancers wishing to be considered for Part A must also submit video #2.

Dancers of all ages and levels are encouraged to apply, but dancers under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. During the Tattoo, dancers must wear a full Highland outfit in accordance with the RSOBHD dress code; dancers are responsible for providing their own outfits. Rehearsal schedules will be finalized at a later date; dancers participating in Part A will be asked to attend more rehearsals than dancers only participating in Part B. By applying, dancers are committing to attending all rehearsals and performances.

Video #1: 4-step Highland Fling

All dancers must submit a video of themselves doing a 4-step Fling with your choice of steps. During the Tattoo there will be set steps. Requirements:

  • Dance must be done completely, independently, and to music.
  • Must submit a link to a public or unlisted YouTube video.
  • Dancers may wear practice clothing or abide by the RSOBHD dress code, but we must be able to see the dancer's entire body clearly.
  • Video must be filmed within the past six months.

Video #2: Choreography

Premier dancers wishing to participate in Part A, the choreographed section of the “Mass Fling” act, may indicate interest by including a link to a second YouTube video of themselves dancing a choreography. Dancers who do not submit a choreography video will not be considered for Part A. Requirements:

  • Approximately 1-2 minutes long
  • Must submit a link to a public or unlisted YouTube video
  • Dancers may wear practice clothing or abide by the RSOBHD dress code, but we must be able to see the dancer's entire body clearly.
  • Solo (preferred) or small group (indicate which dancer you are in the group)
  • Must be a Highland dance choreography, not a different genre of dance
  • Video must be filmed within the past year.
