Juried Art Competition & Exhibition

10 am - 4 pm


Fountain City Forward invites artists of all ages to participate in the Total Eclipse of the Art Juried Art Competition. This competition aims to allow artists to creatively explore the theme of “Total Eclipse of the Art” through representational or abstract ideas using various media. Non-themed pieces of any subject are also welcomed. 


There will be three age categories: Adult (18+), Teen (13+), and Child (12 and under). 


Categories

Included, but not limited to paintings, sculptures, digital art, printmaking, fiber art, photography, graphic art, and mixed media.


Deadline

The deadline for submission is March 22, 2024.


Awards & Prizes

Depending on the number and quality of artworks submitted, the following prizes will be considered:

  • Overall Best in Show
  • Best Use of Theme
  • Best in Category
  • Adult First Prize & Runner Up
  • Teen First Prize & Runner Up
  • Child First Prize & Runner Up


Eligibility

This competition is open to all artists, regardless of age, who presently live in Indiana or Ohio. Works must be original, completed in the last year, and NOT PREVIOUSLY EXHIBITED IN ANY JUDGED OR JURIED SHOWS. 

Accepted works may NOT be withdrawn by the artist prior to the close of the exhibition and must abide by the specifications below.

Both 2-D and 3-D works are eligible, including drawing, printmaking, mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, fiber arts, clay, jewelry, sculpture, wood, and glass. Works must be original art produced by the submitting artist completed in 2023-2024.


Art produced using AI (Artificial Intelligence) is NOT eligible for this competition.  “AI in art competitions undermines the hard work of traditional artists, puts them at a massive time disadvantage, and limits overall creativity.” - Alexander Liu


Jurors

Shaun T. Dingwerth, a Wayne County native and IU graduate, currently serves as the Executive Director of the Richmond Art Museum (RAM), where he has been since 1998. He has organized and curated numerous art exhibitions, including several historic Indiana artists. Most recently he curated the exhibition, Impressions of Love: J. Ottis and Winifred Brady Adams and provided an essay for the corresponding exhibit catalog for the David Owsley Museum of Art’s 100th Anniversary located on the campus of Ball State University.

Dingwerth is considered an authority on the Richmond Group artists. He wrote, The Richmond Art Group Artists, published by Indiana University Press, selling out of the first printing. He has also written articles in both the Plein Air Magazine and Fine Art Connoisseur over the years. Dingwerth has also given numerous lectures throughout the state about the development of the Art Association of Richmond and the Richmond Group.


Christian Adams, a Wayne County native and Indiana University graduate, currently serves as Earlham’s art curator managing the Earlham College Permanent Art Collection since 2018. The  collection contains Midwestern art and craft, tribal art and artifacts, Quaker art, East Asian art and works on paper. He also helps coordinate acquisitions donated by members of the community and alumni to be preserved in Earlham’s permanent collection.

Adams spent 30 years of his professional career in Hawaii as a gallerist specializing in American Contemporary Art. He served as Gallery Director at Martin Lawrence Galleries from 1986-2000 and was Executive Director at Dolphin Galleries from 2000-2017. 


Specifications

Each artist may submit a maximum of two (2) works.  All works must be maintenance-free.  No entry may exceed 60 inches in any direction, including frame, or exceed 50 pounds in weight.


Entry Fee

Adults (18+): $25 for up to 2 pieces.

Teens (13-18): $10 for up to 2 pieces.

Children (12 and under): NO ENTRY FEE (up to 2 pieces)


Framing

Fountain City Forward will not be responsible for works damaged through faulty wiring or framing. Unframed 2-D pieces should be protected by clear plastic sleeves, laminate, or the like without obstruction of the art piece itself. 


Insurance and Liability

Fountain City Forward will provide insurance on all works during the exhibit for the listed sales price (if applicable). Fountain City Forward will not assume liability for loss or damage during transit to and from the exhibition.


Notification of Acceptance and Important Information

Artists will be listed on the Fountain City Forward Facebook and website, as well as notified via email by March 25, 2024. 

The email listed on your submission form will be used as the primary form of contact for notification.
