In a change from previous years, our first session starts Friday, June 21st at 1:00 PM, the popular microphone array comparison. The first meal provided at the Workshop will be dinner on Friday, so make your own arrangement for lunch before the 1:00 PM session. The Workshop will finish on Sunday at 12:00 noon. Though we use the <a href="https://sierra.sfsu.edu/" style="color:inherit;text-decoration:inherit;user-select:auto;box-sizing:inherit" target="_blank">Sierra Nevada Field Campus</a> as our home base, our event is not a class listed in the San Francisco State curriculum. <a href="https://sierra.sfsu.edu/faqs" style="color:inherit;text-decoration:inherit;user-select:auto;box-sizing:inherit" target="_blank">Please check their FAQ</a> first but reach out if you have facility questions. We will assign you to a platform tent once we have coordinated with the Field Campus staff. Do not enter a platform tent until you have been assigned one. We will be sharing the facility with at least one other group during our stay.  Parking:Park in the outer parking lot just off the highway. If you need to unload heavy equipment or supplies, you can pass over the bridge (assuming it is not closed) into the camp, but you will need to return your car to the parking area after unloading. Clothing:Nights and early mornings are cold, days may be hot. Bring layered clothing so that you can remove layers as the day heats up. For recording the dawn chorus, do not wear clothing that is noisy when you move. Bring good walking shoes or hiking boots; you will have the option to walk as little or as much as you like but you will be standing for long periods in the field and your comfort is essential to being able to stand still! Bring a hat and sunscreen for sun protection, as well as sunglasses. A warm cap and gloves for the morning dawn choruses have proven to be useful.  Equipment: There are several different types of basic set-up that can be used. If you don't have equipment, please let us know and we will set you up with a rig. Otherwise, a basic set-up would include a recorder with manual level control, a directional microphone, and headphones. Use a fresh set of batteries and bring a spare set or a charger. Some standard batteries (AAA, AA, and 9V) will be available at the workshop, but if you have equipment that uses an unusual battery, be sure you have a backup, and check to be sure both batteries are working before you come. If you do not own equipment the NSS will loan you an outfit. Many participants will share their gear and you will gain useful knowledge about the equipment you want to obtain and use in the future. Due to the remote location, theft has never been a problem. You are reminded, however, that the Nature Sounds Society assumes no responsibility for loss or theft. Power for chargers is available in the main hall, the director's cabin and the outside bathrooms, but not in the platform tents. Other belongings:Sunscreen; insect repellent (Carman Valley does have mosquitoes); day pack; flashlight (headlamp flashlights are extremely useful as they free up your hands for other activities); water bottle; note pad and pens; spare batteries and recording media; alarm clock to wake you up for the early morning sessions.  Accommodations:If you chose to stay in one of the platform tents, you will most likely share a tent to due to the number of students on campus. But feel free to request your tent-mate! All tents have a rain fly covering for extra protection from weather and to provide warmth. Many of the platforms or surrounding area have room to hold a lawn chair, if you care to bring one. Each tent has 2 cots, each with a mattress and fitted sheet. Bring your own sleeping bag, pillows and towels. The platform tents have mattresses with covers that are changed between groups.  At each end of the campus are toilets, sinks and showers open to all genders. The showers are private open air stalls ~ many report that a hot shower under the pines or the stars is a highlight of their day! There are additional bathrooms and showers, men’s and women’s, in the lower level of the dining hall. You will find cubbies to store your toiletries for the time you are in residence. Don’t forget your towel, toiletries, and something to carry everything! We recommend bringing a good sleeping bag and warm sleeping clothes as the nights can be quite chilly. Mornings are especially chilly, so a robe or down jacket and hat will be appreciated. Useful to have at night are a headlamp or other battery-operated light. Your things can be packed in a sturdy box which can double as a bedside table or a place to store things while you are in camp. Food:We have signed you up for the meal service in advance, based on your preferences and needs (e.g., vegetarian, vegan, special restrictions - wheat, milk, eggs, etc). Two hot dinners with a salad bar are provided. Saturday is a field breakfast with coffee/tea. Sunday is a hot breakfast in the camp. Lunch fixings are laid out during breakfast for you to craft your own sandwich. It is useful to bring a sandwich container to re-use each day. Kitchen staff is happy to accommodate your special dietary needs while you stay. Be sure you noted special needs on your registration form as the kitchen needs to know your allergies in advance. The dining hall has a double refrigerator with some space for you to store snack items during your stay. There is shelf space for dry goods. If you are bringing food to store, please make sure it is labeled clearly with your name. We also ask that you remember to remove all of your food when you leave.  NO FOOD IS ALLOWED IN TENTS! We have black bears moving through the campus occasionally. If there is no food in your tent, they will move on. It probably isn’t a good idea to leave food in your RV or car either. Connectivity:There is no cell service currently at the Field Campus, or in Bassetts or in Sierra City. To receive cell service, drive 6+ miles up Hwy 49 until you come into view of Sierra Valley. There is a large turnout at that spot where your phone will come to life.We have limited internet on site for staff to manage our registration system and emails. We can allow occasional use of the internet on a case by case basis if it is absolutely necessary for you. Otherwise, we invite you to unplug, relax, and enjoy the increasingly rare experience of being "off grid"!Have questions?
