In the contemporary public discourse in China, the term ‘Cultural Revolution’ repeatedly emerges as a historical metaphor in discussions about various contentious issues: the #MeToo movement, suppression of private enterprises, COVID-19 prevention policies, student reporting on teachers, and even special forces university students engaged in budget travels are all metaphorically likened to the Cultural Revolution. In recent years, it has become increasingly common in the public discourse in the United States as well. For instance, right-wing activist Christopher Rufo described critical race theory as ‘America’s Cultural Revolution’. The presentation of the Cultural Revolution in Netflix’s “The 3 Body Problem” also provoked debates in both China and overseas.
Why do we use the Cultural Revolution as a historical metaphor in this way? In this event, we will together comb through the history of Cultural Revolution memories in the public sphere and discuss the ways in which we use these memories.
