We Free Strings - live at Brooklyn Conservatory

Event closed

We will close out our 2022-23 season with the string and rhythm collective, We Free Strings, at the historic Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in Park Slope on Sunday afternoon, July 9th at 4:40 pm.

We Free Strings is an Afro-Modernist string ensemble that performs original, creative, improvised music. This performance will include Alex Waterman (cello), Gwen Laster,

(violin), Michael Wimberly (percussion), Ken Filiano (bass), and Melanie Dyer (viola).

We Free Strings started in 2011 in Harlem at the home of Melanie Dyer, where the group became part of Bb Universe, a parlor series featuring underground public performances, open rehearsals, film, theater and activism. We welcome them to Brooklyn!

"We Free Strings harbors the raw radicalism, cultural pride and multi-media sensibility of the Loft days. [The] group swings, burns, sizzles and swoons through the composed and the improvised (and the seemingly composed but improvised)..." John Pietaro, NYC Jazz Record, Feb 2023.

"...the idea of jazz strings takes on a new identity."
Mike Shanley, Jazz Times
