The Iowa City Bike Library and Bur Oak Land Trust are teaming up to bring you another fun
Women/Trans*/Femme Bike Touring Adventure.
Please do not register unless you are sure you can come. When 50% of the registrants drop out last minute it makes planning a free event harder than it needs to be. Of course, things come up and you can let us know if you want to give your spot to someone else.
Saturday, June 1st. Arrive at Bike Library between 2-2:40pm for adjustments. 2:45pm introductions. Leave 3pm. The
Bike Library is open at 10am for fixes.
Sunday, June 2nd: 10am (or earlier) pack up and return.
Overnight parking is across the street from the Bike Library. The main route with leads and sweep will involve 11.8 miles of pavement, gravel, and B roads to arrive at the Bur Oak Land Trust property. There is also an alternate 14.3 mile all paved route.
The paved route may be taken self-supported with a friend or small group to meet the main
group at the campsite if gravel is not your thing. Routes and exact location will be sent to registrants. Email
[email protected] or [email protected] if you have any questions prior to registering about the route.
Limit of 20 people.
Provided: Drinking water, cold drinks, port-a-potty, firewood, and fire starters.
The overnight will offer a hike with a Bur Oak naturalist, possible creek stomp, foraging,
campfire, and plenty of conversation. The event is free. We do suggest that you make a donation to cover the port-a-potty rental. Additional donations are very welcome!
Contact Susan Stamnes if you need any gear. I have an extra complete kit including a single
tent.
Additional Notes to Registrants.
- Bring at least two (preferably 3) bottles of water or Gatorade for the ride there.
One is not enough on a warm day. We will stop after a major hill to drink and
regroup.
- There will be no shame in hike a bike sections on the hills. Carrying weight can
be tough especially if the gravel is chunky or sandy.
- Bring water shoes! Depending on the water levels, we may need to ford the
creek to get into the park.
- Bring bug repellent. Ticks and poison ivy exists in the pine grove near camping
area. Be prepared with long sleeves, pants, and shoes.
- Bring your own food. Bonus to you if you want to share homemade items
especially foraged from your backyard.
- No speakers (There are neighbors nearby)
Sag: We have one person who is driving a vehicle for emergencies. Please let
your family or a friend know the route and where you will be in case of
emergency or severe weather.
The event will happen in cool weather or expected light rain. Severe weather
predictions will cancel the event. Check your email for any updates close to the
start time.
- A back blinky light is recommended even in bright sun. A front light is
recommended in gray or drizzly weather. A helmet is non-negotiable.
- Leave no trace.
Foraging should be done in the company of experts. No flowers or seed heads
should be foraged.
- Drinking water, cold soda, cold beer, port-a-potty, firewood and fire starters will be
provided.
- Bring snacks for the bike ride. Rule of thumb: eat before you are hungry and drink before
you are thirsty.
- Bring a chair, stool, pad, or blanket to sit on.
- Hydrate ahead of time! Be drinking plenty of water the day before and morning of the
ride.
- Come to a WTF Night any Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM with questions.
- Come to the Bike Library to do maintenance to your bike and get set up for hauling gear.
We are open Wednesday 12 - 5, Friday 12 - 5, and Saturday at 10 for last minute
adjustments. Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.
Gravel and B Road Route with Lead and Sweep. Dry Route. An more direct, alternate route
of 11.1 miles will happen if conditions are muddy on B roads.
