IEM Debut!  Musica Spira and Friends presents "An Extraordinary Innovation".

Musica Spira (Music Breathes) brings the underrepresented stories of early modern female musicians to life through thought-provoking programs that shed light on women’s multifaceted contributions to music history and advocate for the continued empowerment and recognition of women in all times and places.

“An Extraordinary Innovation” celebrates the accomplishments of the professional women musicians in the Italian concerto delle donne and the century of repertoire they inspired. In the 1580s, the Duke of Ferrara made the bold move to hire three virtuosic sopranos to entertain his elite guests. This created quite a spectacle, and soon many Italian courts were competing to win the best women singers, often paying them astonishing performance fees and commissioning new music for them. Our program includes works by Luzzasco Luzzaschi, Claudio Monteverdi, Barbara Strozzi, Luigi Rossi, Isabella Leonarda, and Francesca Caccini that were inspired by the first professional women musicians in Italy.
