Historic Rugby’s Annual Opening Day Irish Road Bowling Tournament 

on Saturday, March 16 is coming up! 

So start shaking off that winter chill, gather your teammates, 

and warm up that arm. 


The schedule is (all eastern time): 

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Meet in front of Harrow Road Cafe for a demonstration and practice for those new to Irish Road Bowling or looking for a refresher.

12:00 PM - 12:30 PM: Walk over to the Visitor Centre to register and pick-up your t-shirt (available for purchase online or when you arrive), score card and cannon ball.

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM: The tournament begins at the Clear Fork Area Volunteer Fire Department (near RM Brooks Store) and winds its way back to the Harrow Road Canteen.

3:30 PM (approx.): Award winners announced. The winning team is determined by the fewest number of throws to complete the course. The divisions are as follows (one winner per division):

  • Men 

  • Women

  • Co-ed

  • Youth - all members ages 13-17

  • Family - at least 1 player must be 12 or under

  • 70-plus (all team members are ages 70-plus)

  • Plus a couple fun surprise divisions

Teams can be made up of 2, 3 or 4 people. 


St. Patrick's Day attire is invited and encouraged. You can order your Rugby Irish Road Bowling T-shirt in advance and ensure your size is available when you purchase your tickets. This year's shirt is a white short sleeve tee with green logo printed by the volunteers of Rugby Printing Works.


The Canteen & Cottage Catering food truck, Fire Department’s grills, and MoCo Brewing Project will be in the Village for Saturday’s festivities to keep you nourished.


Lucas McCoy of Southern Sunrise out of Cookeville, TN and Rugby's own Gerald Hanwright will be performing as folks arrive, entertaining tournament supporters, and welcoming the competitors back as they approach the finish line.


Parking is available behind the Visitor Centre and at Harrow Road Cafe. 


We invite you to make a weekend of it. Other activities over the weekend are: 

  • Thursday - Saturday at 9:00A, 11:00A, 1:00P & 3:00P and Sunday at 1:00P & 3:00P - Take a guided tour of Rugby’s historic buildings.

  • Saturday, 10:00 AM ET - a guided hike led by Holly Taylor, assistant state naturalist for TDEC, will leave from the Visitor Centre to view the awakening of the early spring wildflowers along some of the surrounding trails. No registration is required. 

  • Sunday, 12:15-2:15 PM - Eric Wilson Memorial Hike - meet at the Visitor Centre at 12:15 PM to honor the late Eric Wilson on his birthday on a hike along the trails Eric helped build and maintain.

  • Visit the Village’s historic print shop, art gallery and shops featuring a unique assortment of local handcrafted items.
