Jonathan Blazon Yee, LCSW, a mixed race Asian American psychoanalyst, will be sharing his clinical work with a Chinese client during the start of the COVID 19 pandemic.
What emerges when a mixed race, Asian American therapist works with an Asian client?
How does each perceive the other? What is created between them? What is felt but unknown and unspoken?
How does a global pandemic impact their relationship and the treatment?
What might reverberate in each post termination?
TAACP’s Fall faculty, Clara Kwun, LCSW, Sandra Park MD, and Jyoti M. Rao, LMFT will offer their reflections on the case material. The case presentation will be followed by Q&A and community discussion.
There will also be time to ask questions regarding Fall classes to be announced in the first week of August.
Jonathan Blazon Yee, MFA, LCSW (he/him), is a graduate and current faculty member of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP). Jonathan is currently the co-director of NIP’s One-Year Evening program and was recently elected to the institute’s Board of Directors. In addition, he has recently joined the teaching faculty of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP). Jonathan received his MSW from New York University following a career in fine arts, teaching, and education management. He operates a private practice in New York City that engages in experiences of immigration and cultural integration, particularly within the Asian American community.
Clara Kwun, LCSW (she/her) is a social worker, psychoanalyst and faculty at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. She is the co-chair of the Coalition for Clinical Social Workers which offers programming that centers the intersection of psychoanalytic thinking and social justice. Clara has served as the dean of the Psychoanalytic Education Division at SFCP for 6 years, and also was co-chair of the Anti Racism Task Force. She is on the Community Psychoanalysis Consortium associated with the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California Community Psychoanalysis Project. She has been teaching and supervising for over 20 years at agencies including Smith College of Social Work, The Richmond Area Multi Services, University of California Department of Psychiatry, Access Institute, California Pacific Medical Center and the Chinatown North Beach Clinic. She maintains a private practice in San Francisco seeing adults, adolescents and couples.
A daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, Sandra Park, MD (she/her) is interested in applying psychoanalytic principles to understand the impact of race and culture on development and the therapeutic dyad. Dr. Park is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Research and Training, a voluntary faculty member at the Weill Cornell Medical Center and in full-time private practice in New York City. She has created and taught courses on racial dynamics at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Research and Training and the Weill Cornell Medical Center Department of Psychiatry. A recipient of several teaching awards at both Cornell and Columbia, she has written on the topics of race and racial identity.
Jyoti M. Rao, LMFT (she/her) is Associate Faculty and an advanced candidate at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. An experienced instructor, she is National Faculty at the Florida Psychoanalytic Institute and was formerly Core Faculty and Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where she also directed the post graduate training program at a psychodynamic clinic. Her publications, which address topics at the intersection of psychoanalysis and the social world, have appeared in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association; International Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies; and Psychoanalysis, Culture, and Society. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies and is an Editorial Associate of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. She is in private practice in San Francisco.
