This painting was created in Black Seed Studio in January 2024 as a David C. Driskell Fellow. I was inspired by Cueva de las Manos in Argentina as I thought about the roles our hands have in the act of making. I was asking myself questions about how we are connected to humanity through time and what pieces of us stay on earth when we die as I emulated this ancient cave painting. It captures the essence of a moment of release, where tension suddenly breaks, creating a vivid sensory experience that blurs the line between sight and sound. My Bird That Speaks by Timilehin Oludare, AiR '25
$1,500

Starting bid

My Bird That Speaks is a drawing of an expanded bird figure rendered in liquid white ink, evoking themes of transformation, transcendence, and communication. Birds hold deep symbolic meaning across histories, religions, and philosophies—as messengers, omens, or spiritual entities. By distorting its form, I explore surrealism, materiality, and the fluidity of meaning, creating a presence that feels both familiar and otherworldly. The title suggests an active, expressive force, tying into my broader exploration of sound, language, and perception. Through this piece, I push against fixed interpretations, allowing the bird to exist in a liminal space where myth, memory, and abstraction converge. Ehite ink on paper, 16 x 22 inches, 2024.
