Lucia di Lammermoor is a tragic opera by Gaetano Donizetti, set in Scotland and based on Sir Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The story follows Lucia Ashton, a young woman caught in a bitter feud between her family and the Ravenswoods. She is secretly in love with Edgardo Ravenswood, the last of his family, but their relationship is doomed by political and familial enmity.

Lucia's brother, Enrico, forces her to marry another man, Arturo, for political advantage. Under intense pressure and manipulation, Lucia agrees to the marriage, but her heart remains with Edgardo. After the wedding, in a fit of madness, Lucia murders Arturo and descends into insanity. The opera's climax is marked by Lucia’s famous "mad scene," where she hallucinates about her lost love.
